Arabic Calligraphy: is the artistic practice of handwriting, or calligraphy, and by extension, of bookmaking, in the lands sharing a common Islamic cultural heritage. This art form is based on the Arabic script, which for a long time was used by all Muslims in their respective languages. They used it to represent God because they denied representing God with images. Calligraphy is especially revered among Islamic arts since it was the primary means for the preservation of the Qur'an. Suspicion of figurative art as idolatrous led to calligraphy and abstract depictions becoming a major form of artistic expression in Islamic cultures, especially in religious contexts. The work of calligraphers was collected and appreciated.

The script family: The classification of scripts and writing systems can be difficult. Some relationships and derivations are well-documented and accepted, but others are less clear. Many scripts also seem to have no particular relationship to any other script, other than hints of influence.

The Properties of the Arabic language: in this section you will know more about the Arabic language such as Concatenation; Capital letters do not exist in Arabic. Variation in shape depends on the position of the letter within the word. In other words, the shape of the letter varies depending on whether the letter is at the beginning, middle or end of a word. However, a distinctive part or feature of that letter will often be there to facilitate its recognition.



The Lessons

This is the core part of each level as it is the part that relates to the study of the Arabic language. Level One is comprised of ten lessons; out of which two are devoted to revision. In general a lesson is divided into three parts: presentation, exercises and games. Each part is further sub-divided in order to focus on the different skills. An attempt is made to develop all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking - within the limitation of available technology. Speech recognition is to be included in future versions of the program.

The 'Learn Arabic on line' course is designed to cover the needs of learners at all levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. To make this possible the development of five levels is foreseen.
