Yarmouk University (YU) has recently signed a cooperation agreement with Dubai-based ArabiCollege. The agreement was signed by YU President Sultan Abu Orabi and ArabiCollege CEO Mohammad Bamatraf. Yarmouk University recognised the unique opportunity to integrate an online component to support its Language Centre’s teaching materials and believed that ArabiCollege is uniquely positioned to successfully offer the most technological ways of learning Arabic online through 24/7 live and open conversation classes. Under the agreement? ArabiCollege will be providing Yarmouk on-campus foreign students of diverse nationalities with ArabiCollege online services. Hussein Obeidat, the Language Centre director stated: “The goal of this partnership is to keep students in touch with Arabic language 24/7 to improve their Arabic language skills extensively all online whenever and wherever they are.” Meanwhile, YU will provide ArabiCollege with its extensive experience in teaching Arabic to foreigners. Building new online materials developed by Y?rmouk and ArabiCollege academic professors in addition to conducting conferences and events for the Arabic language. The signing ceremony was attended by Zuhair Al Sabbagh the University’s vice president and Yousef Tubaishat the public relations director; and from ArabiCollege, Omar Babhair, the board director, and Heba Al Nasser, the business development manager.

Independence Charter School has received a federal grant of nearly $600,000 that will allow the Center City school to significantly expand a pilot introductory Arabic program. School officials said they would use the funds from the U.S. Department of Education’s Foreign Language Assistance Program to expand the Arabic program to include all students in sixth through eighth grades and provide more opportunities for students to learn about the language and Arab culture. The school, which has been recognized for its international education emphasis, offers two Spanish programs, including an immersion program. - Martha Woodall
